| In the 1920's, most drivers use to travel to Daytona Beach in Florida to set records and to race as long as they could. Even though France and Belgium were the traditional places to set land speed records, Daytona Beach eventually became known as the place to go. There were 8 consecutive records set between 1927 and 1935. It all started with an epic race between Ransom Olds and Alexander Winton. 1903, the race becomes historic, and attracts Motorists from everywhere to what became "The Dayton Beach Road Course". Dayton Beach became swamped with fast cars and racing drivers, and events were put on every year. Then William France arrived. He raced once or twice at Dayton Beach, and then took over running the "Daytona Event" in 1938, and promoted a few races. France received the notion that people would like to see stock cars racing. Frequently drivers would not be paid for winning races, as people running the event would do away with the money. So He began talks with other drivers and promoters, and finally formed NASCAR on February 21, 1948. The points system was written on a bar napkin, and leagues were soon formed. Since then it's undergone quite a few changes –which include new leagues, and in 1970 there were major changes to its structure. It's still very popular, especially the Sprint Cup –which generates the most profit and interest. The 2006 Sprint Cup season consisted of 36 races over 10 months, with over $4 million in total prize money at stake in each race. Despite this popularity, it has been victim to a lot of critics. People say the cars no longer look anything like "stock" cars. Of course with all motor sports people complain about pollution, and how the fumes contain lead. So NASCAR started from a man with an idea, writing on a bar room napkin. Now it's the most popular racing sport in the USA! |
